SAS in-database analytics on Teradata database accelerates query times, better manages growing data volumes, increased user service demands

TOKYO (March 01, 2012) –  Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the analytic data solutions company, announced today that Nissen Co., Ltd., a leading online retailer (headquarters: Kyoto-shi, Kyoto; Shinya Samura, President and Representative Director) has implemented a Teradata integrated data warehouse (IDW).

The new Teradata IDW supports SAS analytics running inside the database to analyze complex volumes of data on millions of customers and products to facilitate relevant offers, order acceptance, product delivery, handling of returns, stocking, loss-profit calculations, and predictive analysis for planning. Nissen is one of the leading retailers in Japan, with a wide variety of merchandise including apparel, household items, furniture, and accessories through catalogues and on the Internet.

“We are pleased to say that Nissen’s new Teradata IDW went live in November 2011 — integrated with and running SAS software, and the analytic environment is meeting user expectations,” said Yukihiko Yoshikawa, President,  Teradata Japan, Ltd. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo). “Nissen is a pioneering company in the use of complex and high-volume data. This implementation is important to the business and is another innovative step forward.”

Prior to the use of the new Teradata IDW, the retailer was experiencing rapid growth in data volume and in the number of analytic requests, which adversely affected system performance, causing delays in business processes. Nissen then decided to adopt Teradata to manage its data warehousing, and together with SAS in-database technology, queries run faster and analytic results are very positive. By analyzing data inside the database, time is saved because data does not need to be moved to a different data mart for analysis.

The retailer reports that the Teradata IDW’s powerful parallel processing significantly accelerates data analytic performance –quicker than previous response times. According to validation testing conducted using actual data just before the full production implementation, the response times for complex queries has been greatly reduced.

A growing number of Nissen employees use the analytic data system on a daily basis for customer analysis, campaign management, and similar business processes. Since the Teradata IDW runs in parallel, high data volumes are managed smoothly and high performance and precision are completely steady.

Over the years, Nissen has used three analytic systems – and the recent migration of the main system to Teradata represents the first phase. In the future, all analytic data systems will be migrated onto Teradata running SAS.  Today, Nissen’s Internet sales and catalogue sales are managed separately but soon will be integrated on Teradata, which will become the enterprise-level data analysis infrastructure for the entire retail business.
