Data scientists contribute to market momentum in harnessing big data
SAN CARLOS, Calif. (June 14, 2011) – The explosion of emerging big data and the phenomenal growth of interest by companies has prompted Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC) to host a webcast entitled, “Big Data Analytics Comes of Age: How to unlock the potential of multi-structured data.”
“We are on the edge of a revolution and the message for our customers is that emerging big data is the new business imperative; the business intelligence hidden in emerging big data is now critical for business success,” said Randy Lea, vice president, product marketing and management, Teradata Corporation. “To get value from the data, quants or data scientists can be analytic innovators who create tremendous business value within an organization, quickly exploring and uncovering game-changing insights from vast volumes of data, as opposed to merely accessing transactional data for operational reporting.”
A recent IDC report, “Take Care of Your Quants: Focusing Data Warehousing Resources on Quantitative Analysts Matters,” Doc # 227524, March 2011 recommends that businesses, “Ensure that quantitative analysts get the priority treatment when using the data warehouse. Although many different user groups can benefit from the data in the data warehouse, it is the quantitative analysts who can maximize the benefits of the investment in the data warehouse. This user group may not scream the loudest when not given appropriate support because they are used to individual efforts to get around technical and organizational roadblocks, but a greater effort should be made to recognize these users.”
According to Teradata, customers should quickly act to gain the business advantages created by the emerging class of quants or data scientists. Their skills can best be described as a mix of technical and business entrepreneur. Aster Data provides data scientists the most comprehensive analytic platform, services, and tools to discover and act on insights that were previously unavailable.
The IDC report articulates the business value of leveraging big data, “The difference between leaders and the rest of organizations shows that those organizations that don’t introduce new analytic techniques and new types of data are less likely to find themselves among the leaders within their industry. The biggest positive differences among leaders and the rest come from the introduction of new types of data. This may include either new transactional data sources or new external data feeds of transactional or multi-structured inter-actionable data. The latter may include Web click stream or data that is a by-product of social networking.”
