Jaspersoft consolidates PaaS reporting foundation with native support for Hadoop, multiple NoSQL databases and MPP analytic databases
SAN FRANCISCO (January 25, 2011) – Jaspersoft today released a broad set of software to support a wide variety of Big Data sources for Business Intelligence (BI) reporting. Companies are storing more and more of their data in data stores such as Hadoop, NoSQL databases and massively parallel processing (MPP) analytic databases because of their inherent cost and scale advantages relative to traditional databases. Today, with the release of over a dozen Big Data connectors as part of its open source “Big Data Reporting” project, as well as beta connectors for selected Big Data proprietary databases, Jaspersoft becomes the first and only BI vendor to deliver native reporting for Hadoop, NoSQL and MPP analytic databases.
This broad Big Data support further emphasizes Jaspersoft’s architectural flexibility and its advantage over other BI vendors. This flexibility includes the ability to be easily embedded or customized and to be deployed on-premises or in a multi-tenant deployment. All these capabilities serve as the perfect foundation for native reporting within any PaaS cloud or hosted integrated development environment (IDE).
Big Data systems are generally recognized as those that provide massive scale out capabilities for large data volumes in the multiple terabyte and petabyte range, and are too expensive and unwieldy to manage with traditional systems. There has been a growth in the interest in leveraging this scale of data for BI, but current BI solutions do not offer native connectivity and querying for many of these sources. This makes BI access impractical as customers want to be able to use the native syntax and query language of the big data system directly rather than have to do a data dump into a separate relational system to do their reporting.
“The continued explosion in data is driving interest in a plethora of new data stores that can handle massive data volumes cost effectively,” said Jaspersoft VP of Product Strategy Karl Van den Bergh. “However, BI vendors to date have focused on providing platform support for a only small subset because they are limited to those with a SQL interface like Hadoop’s Hive project. Thanks to Jaspersoft’s unique data agnostic architecture, we are the only BI vendor to provide native support for all three legs of the Big Data stool: Hadoop, NoSQL, and MPP analytic databases. This gives our customers ultimate flexibility in terms of being able to report off of any Big Data system they might choose to use.”
Jaspersoft native reporting works with the following data stores:
- Hadoop – Jaspersoft supports Hadoop via the Hive SQL interface, reading files via HDFS including the Avro file format, as well as via HBase.
- NoSQL – Jaspersoft offers NoSQL support for the following, broadly recognized major categories of data stores: Key Value Stores, Document Databases, BigTable Clones, Graph Databases, and Data Grid Caching among others. Jaspersoft’s open source projects for reporting against NoSQL technologies include: Cassandra, MongoDB, Riak, HBase, CouchDB, Neo4J, Infinispan, VoltDB and Redis. A non-open source connector is in beta for VMware GemFire.
- MPP Analytic Database – Jaspersoft supports IBM’s Netezza MPP analytic database data warehouse and soon will add commercial analysis support. Vertica and EMC Greenplum are also supported.
“Jaspersoft’s vision goes well beyond Big Data. Our modern architecture and agnostic data source support is tailored for the cloud, from IaaS to PaaS, in public or private. In particular, NoSQL support puts us in the driver’s seat to become the de facto embedded standard for reporting and analysis within PaaS cloud environments,” says Brian Gentile, CEO of Jaspersoft.
“Jaspersoft is a key vendor in the embedded BI category. Their support for the emerging data platforms and their recent web UI architecture enhancements demonstrate their desire to become a key element of the new information processing stack,” says analyst Mark Madsen.
Big Data partners are pleased with Jaspersoft’s ability to work with their systems natively:
“With more than 100,000 downloads per month, the MongoDB community is growing larger every day, and native reporting is increasingly important. It’s great that Jaspersoft is leading the way in providing powerful and flexible reporting for MongoDB, and we are pleased to collaborate with them in these efforts.”
– Dwight Merriman, CEO & Co-Founder of 10gen
“Fortune 500 enterprises and mature online properties increasingly demand not just the revolutionary architecture and groundbreaking data protection features of Riak, the distributed database management platform built by Basho, but the simple, familiar, and increasingly powerful BI tools exemplified by Jaspersoft 4. We asked our Fortune clients and they are excited by Jaspersoft’s Riak integration.”
– Earl Galleher, CEO of Basho Technologies
“Our business users all want powerful, simple reporting tools for the data they store in Apache Hadoop. Connecting the Jaspersoft reporting engine directly to Hadoop makes it easy for analysts to use both their source data and the results of their analytics jobs. We’re pleased to see this integration of two popular open source offerings.”
– Mike Olson, CEO of Cloudera
“Graph Databases allow fast analysis of relationships, a hugely growing use case particularly with the exploding sectors of social applications, geospatial information and master data management. It’s great to see Jaspersoft developing a powerful reporting front-end to the leading graph database Neo4j.”
-Emil Eifrem, CEO of Neo Technology.
“VoltDB delivers massively scalable database throughput while maintaining full transaction consistency. It’s the perfect solution for handling the ‘fast data’ requirements of a Big Data infrastructure, where success is measured in milliseconds. VoltDB now integrates with Jaspersoft using standard SQL, enabling real-time analytics at the click of a mouse.”
-Scott Jarr, CEO of VoltDB.
